The in person option isn't even available right now because all the tax offices in Travis county are shut down due to a corruption investigation by the FBI. What's more, in order to change your owner address you have to print out a form and mail it along with a notarized copy of the title to the DMV, or take the title to a tax office and do it in person. Conveniently they waited until I had accrued about $50 in late fees before they decided to match my plate number to my TxTag account and send me to collections. Since the DMV still listed my old address on my registration they sent the bills there. Apparently the system hadn't read my TxTag because it goes through a "maintenance cycle" from 2-4 AM on Sundays (also total bullshit imo) and defaulted to the pay by mail system. I didn't even realize there was an issue until I got a collection notice for a toll on 183A that I had incurred 6 months previously. They send the renewal notices and windshield stickers to my current address. For this reason my car is still registered to the apartment I lived in when I first moved here in 2012, even though I've moved twice since then. It turns out if you move and update your address for your vehicle registration you are only updating the renewal notice address, not the vehicle owner address. The DMV is also complicit in their fuckery. To do that you have to trust people with this level of financial integrity to not "accidentally" double-draw or worse. It more or less works better if you use the deposit-style account that auto-deducts from a debit card whenever it runs out of funds because then your bill is always paid. After 2 hours on the phone it was clear I had to pay them all or hire a lawyer. One time I got 6 different bills for the same road and time from the same company. So you won't notice that a trip or two didn't arrive in the mail. They might split your month into multiple bills. They're going to shrug and argue that's not their problem, you should've been checking the website. 3 months later, you get a bill with late fees. This is especially true if you don't have a TxTag, because it's difficult to even view your charges without a number that is on the bill itself. What you don't know is if the bill is due on July 30, they aren't going to post it until July 29th. Maybe you're diligent and keep checking the website. You use a toll road, and wait to get a bill to pay your balance.
